Playing To An Empty House
Bass, lead guitar, vocals, keyboard, drums
All songs written by Tiran Porter with contributions from Dale Ockerman and Keith Knudsen
I named my album Playing To An Empty House because that's what recording is, isn't it? I came up with that concept as an album title almost 17 years ago. At that time, I pitched it to the powers that were, and it was rejected because “It might adversely affect album or ticket sales.” Okay....I didn't see it that way, of course, so I filed it away to be used whenever I did have my own album. Having always been surrounded by brilliant singers, songwriters and instrumentalists, and being basically shy about my own gifts, it took quitting the band and going on to other musical climates to bring out this completed album. It took me seven years between playing in and around many bands and doing lots of studio woodshedding to record this music. The natural tendency of many is to immediately try pigeonholing, whether by race, past association, genre or marketing. I have gone out of my way to resist all of that free from; competition, compromise, time, clocks, business and all else that I believe constricts a flowing imagination. I spent so long in that studio creating this album. Over dubbing, mixing, and each mix took a long time. I play every instrument except for the drums. At a certain point, my only agenda was to get it done and out there. In the end, I am only competing with myself.
