David Alexander on shooting the Minute by Minute album cover in Detroit:
“When they finished their last set, I had their road manager rush them right off the stage into a little room backstage. And I kicked everybody else out except my assistant, I had the space all lit to take the portrait. I locked the door and you could hear the audience's roaring applause. They were probably lighting their cigarette lighters, waving, calling for an encore. The door was locked and the band could hear all that was going on.Their road manager would start pounding on the door, and he and I were swearing at each other. I was yelling at the band. The band, as you could see in the picture, are dripping with perspiration. You could feel their energy. That's stage performance energy. But I'm yelling at them to just stay where the fuck they were. I just felt there was so much energy, and each one of them in that photo is so totally individual. They were completely themselves. When I thought it was right before they would lose the audience completely, I opened the door and they went back out on stage. They did their encore. Both nights of shooting we never lost the audience. I stretched it as tight as I could to generate the tension. It was fabulous. And it worked.”
