Paul Reed Smith 5 string

The last time I toured with the Doobies I played a Paul Reed Smith 5 string. I removed the frets on this one and this was the first time I played fretless on stage. The body was entirely mahogany. The only thing I don't like about Paul Reed Smith’s single coil pickups is that there's not enough mid-range to them. It's all highs and lows, but not much mids. When I had the frets pulled on the black one, I also sent it back to Paul Reed Smith and had him put a controller in it where I could boost the midrange. And that helped a lot. I played the PRS at Bobby LaKind’s benefit concert on October 19th, 1992. I never told anyone I was playing fretless. After removing the frets on the PRS I never went back to a fretted bass again!

“Anybody that knows Tiran knows that he has the most amazing ears. He stopped playing fretted basses because of the tiny pitch difference. On the F on E the string the first fretted note was making him crazy. So, he said, well, I'm done with frets then, because I can just move my finger and get it how I want it.” - Ken Lawrence, luthier, Sebastopol, CA.
